A huge fire Friday morning caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage and sent one woman to the hospital with burns to her face. The fire happened near First and Saltillo Road and caused significant damage to two mobile homes and an outbuilding.

A resident of the home, 47-year-old Rebecca Daro, heard a hissing noise coming from a propane tank. When she went to investigate, the tank ignited.

The call came in around 6:30 a.m. and the fire was massive when crews arrived.

“The building was completely engulfed when we got here, so those are going off and things were blowing up in them. We take caution in how we attack the fire,” said Southwest Fire Chief Phillip Nalley.

Putting out the blaze was a challenge because of flammable materials inside.

“There was probably a sedaline bottle, oxygen bottles, everything. It was a working shop,” said Chief Nalley. “The guy did mechanical work on vehicles. Propane bottles, paint cans, and everything else was in there.”

Daro suffered burns to her face and hair and was taken to the hospital. She is expected to make a full recovery. A neighbor used the nearby outbuilding to work on classic cars.

Total damages are estimated at $200,000 with the three vehicles alone valued at $165,000. The buildings and cars are a total loss.

Fire investigators are looking into the cause.
