Fish to fertilizer: Denton greenhouse uses unique method to cultivate plants

Grow With The Flow in Denton uses a unique method to cultivate their crop called aquaponics.
“Aquaponics is a cultivation of fish and plants together in a symbiotic system where we use fish waste as fertilizer for our plants and our plants act as a filter to clean the water for our fish,” Owner Jeff Jirovec said.
They use common goldfish that live right on site, helping this environmentally sound way of farming continue to flourish.
“Aquaponics uses about 15 percent of the land and five percent of the water of traditional agriculture. Because it’s in a closed loop system, we’re constantly recycling the water,” Jirovec said.
This distinct way of farming lends to beautiful plants, produce and fresh flowers, which has become a big part of Grow With The Flow’s business.
“The floral design part of the business is really what’s helped it blossom. Brides really love that we can grow the flowers here in Nebraska, and they can talk to us directly and really know about where their blossoms are growing,” Co-owner Heather Husen said.
They can do any kind of arrangement, even specializing in handmade gifts. All of this is part of the local business that Jeff and Heather take so much pride in.
“I think the thing that has grown our business the most is support from local community. Buying things local helps out a lot of different people,” Jirovec said.
It’s that support that Jeff and Heather say keeps their 11 acre aquaponics farm running, and hoping to expand very soon.
Grow With The Flow delivers to Lincoln, Omaha, and surrounding areas.
