Foes of Nebraska school choice bill submit more than 86,000 signatures in repeal effort

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Organizers of a petition aiming to repeal a school choice bill in Nebraska turned in their signatures on Tuesday.

Support Our Schools Nebraska submitted 86,602 signatures to the Secretary of State’s Office.

Election officials will now work to verify those signatures, which will take several weeks.

The referendum needs about 62,000 valid signatures to appear on the general election ballot.

If passed by voters, the referendum would overturn Legislative Bill 1402, which provides $10 million a year in state funding to private school scholarships.
