LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Former Husker coach Mike Riley was appointed Friday to the College Football Playoff selection committee.

Riley is replacing Pat Chun, who recently stepped down and accepted the athletic director position at the University of Washington.

The CFP selection committee ranks the top 25 teams and assigns 12 teams to the playoff bracket at the end of the regular season.

CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock said in a press release that the committee is pleased to have Riley join.

“He has significant experience as a player and coach, and he loves college football,” Hancock said in the release.  “He will bring a unique perspective to the committee. Plus, he is a delightful human being.”

Riley’s decade-spanning career includes stints at Oregon State and Nebraska.  He also served as a head coach for teams in the NFL and USFL.

Riley came to Nebraska in 2015 and led the Huskers to a 6-7 season, which included a win in the Foster Farms Bowl.

The next season, the Huskers went 9-4 but lost in the Music City Bowl.  Nebraska hasn’t been to a bowl game since.

In 2017, Riley was fired after the Huskers went 4-8, which at the time was the worst record for the team since going 3-6 in 1961.
