LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A former high-ranking member of the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office pleaded not guilty Wednesday to two misdemeanors.

Former Sgt. Ryan Schmuecker requested that he be tried by a jury on the two counts of neglecting to serve a misdemeanor warrant.

In June, Schmuecker filed a motion to dismiss the charges, but a judge ruled against him last month.

The sheriff’s office said that in mid-February, Schmuecker failed to serve warrants to two people who were wanted for not paying fines.

Instead, he told them to pay their fines and let them go, the sheriff’s office said.

Schmuecker was fired on May 10.

He is suing the sheriff’s office in Lancaster County District Court to get his job back.
