AAA, Lancaster County deputies working to keep roads safe on Labor Day weekend
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — AAA is once again planning to provide free rides to keep impaired drivers off the roads in Nebraska.
The auto club is activating its Tow to Go service this Labor Day weekend.
“We will send a vehicle tow truck up there to take one person and their vehicle to a safe place within a 10-mile radius from where we picked them up,” said Gene LaDoucer, AAA’s regional director of public affairs.
AAA’s offer is available from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Tuesday.
You don’t have to be a member; just call 855-286-9246.
Also, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign over the holiday weekend.
The extra enforcement is being funded by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Office.
It started Thursday and runs until Sunday night.
“Last night we had, I believe, six or seven deputies on the grant working overtime,” Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said. ‘They ended up getting three drunk drivers off the road and two driving under suspension.”
The sheriff’s office is asking people to plan ahead and look for designated drivers or take other transportation.
