Freezing drizzle, rain possible by Friday afternoon and evening
Our first winter system of the season is set to impact most of eastern Nebraska by Friday afternoon and evening.
But first, we’re cold early on. Wind chills will be teetering on either side of zero in the morning.
The onset of wintry precipitation will start Friday afternoon. A system moving north out of Kansas will work to spread freezing drizzle/rain north through southeast Nebraska by the afternoon and into the evening. Prime hours for some freezing rain and an icy glaze would be by Friday evening.
This could last a while on and off, creating scattered slick spots for those traveling especially during the evening commute and later.
A transition to rain will happen overnight with a few rumbles of thunder possible as temperatures continue to warm during that timeframe. After some morning leftover showers across southeast Nebraska, precipitation chances will diminish by Saturday afternoon as this system exits east with lingering cloud cover.
A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect for all of eastern Nebraska by 2 p.m. Friday until 9 a.m. Saturday morning. Many roads could be slick for the evening commute late into Friday night before the transition to rain. Anticipate winter driving conditions as we see our first winter weather headlines this season.
The highest ice accumulations (up to 0.2″) are expected just north and west of I-80 through Saturday morning.
Possible snow will mainly be possible through northeast Nebraska, and even those amounts should generally stay below half an inch.
Temperatures will recover over the weekend with warming conditions on Sunday. Highs will be in the lower 50s by then.
