Freshman Max Anderson having ‘dream start’ ahead of home opener
Millard West alum Max Anderson is batting nearly .350 with four homeruns heading into Nebraska's home opener on Friday.
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Baseball is back in Lincoln, and the Huskers are returning to the Capital City for their home opener this Friday.
“I think it’s just the excitement of playing on our field. I mean it’s been over a year now,” said head coach Will Bolt.
And this year, the lineup features a homegrown kid who’s off to a pretty good start his rookie season.
“It’s kind of been a dream start,” said Max Anderson.
A dream start for freshman Max Anderson who’s still soaking in his first season as a Husker.
“It was definitely the goal, but it might not have been as realistic in my mind.”
The Millard West alum isn’t having a hard time adjusting to college ball. Anderson is already batting .350 through his first 11 games, featuring four homeruns that has proved he’s comfortable at the plate.
“I think for Max, you’re going to laugh at this, but he just doesn’t care,” said senior Spencer Schwellenbach. “He just wants to go and hit. He doesn’t care about the result.”
Originally committed to Texas A&M University, Anderson ended up playing for his home state and says it was meant to be.
“One of the freshman on the team said to be that it was meant to be that I came here,” Anderson said. “I mean I grew up watching Nebraska and had season tickets. It’s just something I dreamed of.”
Anderson is just one of the players who will step out onto to the field at Haymarket Park tomorrow for the team’s home opener. But a pleasant surprise came this week when it was announced fans will be filling the stands this spring, something these guys couldn’t be more excited about.
“That kind of gave me goosebumps when I was walking out of the stadium,” Anderson said.
This team is ready to play, and Husker fans are in for a treat.
“They are expecting to see a lot of energy from this team. It’s a new brand of baseball that we are playing with coach Bolt. It’s going to be gritty. We are also going to hit some home runs that will show the pretty part of the game. But mostly we are going to be a gritty team that gets after it with a lot of energy. A fun team to watch.”
