Friendship bracelets for Friendship Home: Lincoln Southeast students rallying for good cause

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Students at Lincoln Southeast High School are rallying for a good cause.

Two years ago, the high school’s Feminist Club partnered with the Friendship Home by hosting a drive for items needed at the facility.

This year, the club is selling friendship bracelets and purple ribbons to help raise funds and awareness.

The Friendship Home provides support services and shelter for those experiencing domestic violence.

“I feel like domestic violence isn’t talked about enough,” said club member Orabella Gotschall. “A lot of people are aware that it happens, but they don’t want to share their stories because they don’t feel safe, and it’s important to bring awareness to it.”

Even though nothing can ever fully heal the wound that’s left behind, it means the world to these students to let victims know they are not alone.

“Knowing that you can be there for someone else who hasn’t had the ability to have someone there for them, it’s relieving for both you and the person who has reached out to you,” said Sawyer Hiatt.

Club member Baiya Shacklett doubled down, saying it doesn’t matter what situation you’re in, a simple act can help.

“It feels nice to help other people,” she said. “Even if you don’t understand what they’ve been through or are going through. It’s nice to help the community and be able to pitch in.”

Throughout the year, the home has provided shelter to 442 survivors, including 258 children.

On Wednesday, the club sold 15 to 20 bracelets, raising around $50 so far for the shelter.
