From fencing to arm wrestling, Cornhusker State Games have something for everyone
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Cornhusker State Games kicked into gear Saturday, with dozens of events taking place all over Lincoln and other Nebraska communities.
The games range from pickleball and volleyball to arm wrestling and fencing.
Darby Lytle, a foil fencer in the women over 50 group, said she is excited that the games give people a chance to learn more about sports like hers.
“I think it’s wonderful that the Cornhusker State Games offers all kinds of sports,” she said. “Olympic fencing is one of the more obscure sports, and that is why I love it.”
Foil fencing will continue at Gateway Mall on Sunday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Another event you might not expect, arm wrestling, was held downtown Saturday at the Graduate Hotel.
It was open to people of any age and arm.
A nine-time state champion, Kenny Thomas, spoke with Channel 8 about why arm wrestling is a fun and exciting event for all.
“I enjoy the people and just the thrive and thrill of arm wrestling, to just see if you’re tougher than somebody and if they’re tougher than you,” he said. “There are so many different hand positions. It is truly a lot of fun.”
Thomas said that most of the games are open to competitors of all ages and that many enjoy getting the entire family involved.
“We got little tables for little kids. You know, you can make it a family sport,” he said. “We got kids all the way to grandpas and even grandmas competing sometimes.”
The Cornhusker State Games will continue through July 24 at more than 70 sites in Lincoln, Omaha and surrounding communities.
