Game of the Week: Waverly outlasts Norris in a dramatic shootout
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Friday night’s Game of the Week delivered on every level.
In a battle of the last two undefeated teams in Class B, Waverly outlasted Norris 45-42 thanks to a game winning field goal.
It was a back-and-forth game all night long, with 12 total touchdowns scored between the two teams.
At the half, the Titans led 13-7. But, in the third quarter, Waverly turned it up a notch with three touchdowns.
Senior running back Nathan Axmann scored four touchdowns on the night. Three of them came on the ground, and one in the air that was an 80 yard reception.
After Norris received the ball with 0:42 seconds left, and the game tied at 42, Waverly intercepted the pass from quarterback Evan Greenfield to set the Vikings up at midfield with time to spare.
A few plays later, Waverly found themselves at the 14-yard line with 0:03 seconds remaining.
In came sophomore Landry Maahs, making his first field goal attempt of the season. It was good from 24 yards out.
“That’s Landry’s first field goal attempt at the Varsity level,” said Waverly Head Coach Reed Manstedt. “Really happy for him. We always joke with him and kind of give him a hard time, like ‘Do you even have a pulse Landry?’ That benefits him in moments like this because the moment’s not too big from him.
Landry Maahs’s first field goal attempt of the year could not have come at a bigger time.
