Geneva gives beloved UPS driver key to the city

Hastings native and UPS delivery driver Scott Coe was awarded the key to the city on Wednesday for his service to Geneva.

GENEVA, Neb. (KLKN) – To the city of Geneva, he’s the familiar, friendly face delivering packages to your doorstep.

It’s one reason why Hastings native and UPS delivery driver Scott Coe was awarded the key to the city on Wednesday. Those who know Scott shared what makes him special.

“He’s just really good about getting to know everybody,” explained Hannah Skibstead, manager of the Studio 81 Salon in Geneva. “He’s always friendly, always here when you need him, always goes above and beyond.”

Mayor Eric Kamler was in attendance to award the key to the city. He says that Scott is an integral part to the community.

“Scott’s been an absolute staple in the community for almost 15 years now,” Kamler said. “[It’s] absolutely awesome to have him recognized today. Just a friendly face, warm personality and somebody who’s appreciated by everybody when he goes to everyone’s doorstep.”

Scott arrived at the Studio 81 salon expecting to make a delivery. Instead, he was greeted by dozens of supportive Geneva community members.

“It’s wonderful,” he said. “It is. It’s amazing that I’m appreciated like that.”

Skibstead says she got the idea to do something for Scott when he returned to work two weeks ago. He had been away for a few months after suffering a back injury.

“I was with a client, and he kind of walked in the back door quietly, and dropped packages off,” she said. “When he came back out, we basically jumped out of the chair, excited to see him because he had been away for so long.”

Skibstead got in contact with UPS and Mayor Kamler to see if they could do something for Scott because of his reliable service, especially through the pandemic, and his dedication to the Geneva community, a community that Scott says motivated him to return as quickly as he could.

“It’s the community, it’s delivering to my friends,” he said. “When you like the people you deliver to and you like the town you deliver to, it makes things a lot easier.”

A UPS driver for 22 years who has served the city of Geneva for 15, Scott says he is looking forward to hanging the key to the city inside of his house and sharing the honor  with his family.

“It’s definitely going to be a mark in my history, for my career,” he exclaimed. “I can’t wait to come home and show my wife and say ‘Look what I got!'”
