German shepherds that mauled woman near Lincoln were euthanized, deputy says

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The five German shepherds that attacked a woman west of Lincoln last month were euthanized Monday.

Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said the dogs were classified as “unadoptable” at the Capital Humane Society.

“They have a tendency to be aggressive and to bite,” Houchin said.  “Every agency involved with this case came to the collective decision that the dogs had to be euthanized.”

On Feb. 24, the dogs mauled a woman who was running near Southwest 33rd Street and Pleasant Hill Road.

The victim had puncture wounds to her face, neck, head and arms.  She was taken to a hospital for surgery.

“It’s one of the most severe attacks I’ve ever seen in 31 years,” Houchin said.

Houchin said the victim has gotten better physically but she’s still hurting emotionally.

“She’s having a difficult time,” he said.  “We feel very bad for her.”

On Dec. 17, the same dogs surrounded a couple walking near the property and bit one of them on the hand.

“We just could not allow those dogs to go to somebody else’s neighborhood and be that way,” Houchin said.

The owner of the German shepherds was cited on suspicion of five counts of dog at large.
