UPDATE: Suspect arrested in Grand Island homicide

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. – On Thursday, May 9, a warrant was issued for the arrest of Arek R. Friedricksen, a 16 year old man from Grand Island, for 1st Degree Murder, and Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony.
Later that same day, at 9:20 p.m., Grand Island Police Officers, while attempting contact at a residence associated with Friedricksen, observed a black Dodge pickup behaving suspiciously.
Officers discovered Friedricksen as the passenger in the pickup. The pickup was stopped and Friedricksen was taken into custody without incident.
An additional 15 year old Grand Island male occupant of the vehicle was arrested after he was found to have two active juvenile pick up orders.
He was also charged with Possession of a Controlled substance when suspected methamphetamine was located on him following his arrest.
Friedericksen is currently being held at the Hall County Jail. The 15 year old male was taken to a juvenile detention facility.
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — The Grand Island Police Department said Friday that Vincent Arrellano Jr., 32, of Grand Island, was the man killed in a Wednesday shooting.
“Our officers continue to put in long hours, and are making strides in this investigation, however no new information has been deemed appropriate for release at this time,” said GIPD Captain Jim Duering in a press release on Friday.
The deadly shooting happened around 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday, at an apartment complex near 11th and Evans Streets.
It’s just a block from Lincoln Elementary School, which is the center of the neighborhood.
Police said they found Arrellano with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. He died two and a half hours later in the CHI St. Francis emergency room
Neighbors say they heard screaming and gun shots, which led them to call 911.
GIPD said Thursday that there’s no reason to believe there’s an ongoing concern for more violence, despite no arrests being made yet.
