Grass fire in Merrick County quickly extinguished before getting out of hand

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Firefighters in Merrick County say they put out another fire as dry conditions persist into 2023.

The Chapman Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department says it was called about a grass fire that spread into a field a little after 5 p.m. on Friday.

A deputy with the Merrick County Sheriff’s Office passed by the scene and watched as the fire began to move.

The department says the deputy’s quick response helped firefighters get on scene and put out the fire before it got out of hand.

After the fire was out, crews only needed to monitor the area for flare-ups for another hour before leaving.

It was the department’s fourth fire in less than a week that required a response.

Officials say recent weather conditions have been favorable for fires, leading the department to suspend burn permits until further notice.
