Grass fire near Branched Oak Rd. and N. 40th St.

This time of year, the combination of dry grass and high winds causes brush fires to happen in an instant.

Multiple agencies responded to help get it out.

With the combination of dry grass and high winds, experts say with months of flooding that ravaged Nebraska, things have dried out.

“We got a call about an hour and a half ago of a brush fire, on scene we saw it moving across the field here. It burned about seven acres or so,” Captain of the Ceresco Fire Department, Tyler Heyen said.

Firefighters from Raymond and Ceresco joined forces to put out this blaze near north 40th and branched oak road.

“We put out the surrounding fires of it and the main logs that are still burning we dumped some more water on them and got them extinguished as best we can,” Heyen said.

Lincoln and the surrounding counties are listed as facing a moderate risk for grass fires by the national weather service, and it gets worse the farther West you go.

If conditions stay the same, it won’t be the last time these crews get called out.

“All depends on the moisture coming down. After harvest there’s a lot of burnable material. The grass is drying up and the corn stalks are out in the field there. Could be a hazardous time,” Heyen said.

Fire fighters just finished containing a fire that burned over 600 acres in the Nebraska National Forest near North Platte.
