‘Great accomplishment’: Nebraska eliminates waitlist for developmental disability services

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The State of Nebraska has finally eliminated its waitlist for developmental disability services.

Gov. Jim Pillen celebrated the “great accomplishment” on Monday, saying it would help both children and adults get support when they need it.

In March 2024, he and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services announced an effort to tackle the waitlist.

Over the last 15 months, more than 3,000 people made it off the list, the state said.

“Waivers, natural supports, and Medicaid assistance allow those individuals to remain in their communities, seek employment, and explore a future that meets the needs of each participant at each stage of life,” Tony Green, director of DHHS’s Division of Developmental Disabilities, said in a press release.

The state said it put more than $18 million, plus matching federal funds, into boosting services for those with disabilities.
