LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Two southeast Nebraska lakes are under a health alert.

On Friday, the state issued alerts for harmful algal blooms at Kirkman’s Cove Lake in Richardson County and Iron Horse Trail Lake in Pawnee County.

An unhealthy level of microcystin, a toxin released by some blue-green algae, was found in the lakes.

Recreational boating and fishing are still allowed, but you should not swim or do any other activity that could lead to swallowing the water.

Pets should also be kept out of the water.
