Harmful algal blooms reported in three Nebraska lakes

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Nebraska officials reported harmful algal blooms in three lakes across the state on Friday.
The harmful algal blooms, also known as toxic blue-green algae, were reported at the Maskenthine Reservoir in Stanton County, Kirkman’s Cove Lake in Richardson County and Glenn Cunningham Lake in Douglas County.
State officials said the harmful algal blooms were initially reported last week at Cunningham Lake.
When a health alert is issued, signs are posted at the lake to advise the public to use caution. The designated swimming beaches will also be closed, but boating and fishing are permitted.
