If you’ve passed through the Havelock area recently, you may have seen something a bit out of the ordinary – a large eagle sculpture carved out of a tree wearing personal protective equipment.

The 12-foot tall sculpture, which is located near 68th and Havelock, was carved by artist Nate Hall late last year.

The coronavirus pandemic prompted the homeowners to add the protective gear, which includes a face mask and gloves on the talons.

“I said with friends and family, our eagle has to be safe too,” said Patti McGovern.

Typically, the sculpture has been dressed up for more festive occasion like holidays, but McGovern says she hopes right now it can be a symbol that our nation will endure through these hard times.
