OMAHA, Neb. (KLKN) — Thousands of fans crowded downtown Omaha on Saturday to celebrate their hometown hero, Terence “Bud” Crawford.

Crawford was recently crowned the undisputed middleweight champion of the world after beating the former champion, Canelo Alvarez.

The Omaha native returned to his hometown to a city-wide celebration.

“We’re so proud of Bud, and we support him anytime we can because that’s who we are as people,” Rene Gottsch said.

The parade for Crawford drew in a massive crowd.

Many people watching said they have a lot of pride in his victory.

“For us personally, just being here and living in Omaha, watching someone from our city rise to the occasion is so inspirational for us as adults and also for our kids,” fan Jason Kinney said.

Crawford is considered the pound-for-pound best boxer in the world.

“It feels very special, and we’re excited,” said two fans, Cameron and Rene. “This is putting Omaha on the map, even bigger than it already has been. For him to make history, it means so much to us and all of these people out here. Very special time.”

Bridget Brown, a fan, said the celebration isn’t just about his win – it’s also to honor his impact on the city.

“I love how he gives back to the community,” Brown said. “He represents Omaha.”

One example she brought up was the Omaha musician who played during Crawford’s walkout in Las Vegas.

“He keeps Omaha alive and lets everyone know this is where he’s from, and he’s proud of it,” Brown said. “And we’re proud of him.”

Kinney said it was a no-brainer to show up to celebrate Crawford at the parade.

“This shows culture for the whole city,” said Kinney. “Showing support for somebody – who pound-for-pound could be the best boxer probably ever – you have to come out and support that.”

Some fans believe Crawford could be one of the top five boxers of all time.

Charles Johnson said he hopes Crawford’s legacy will continue.

“Go Bud!” he said. “I’m ready for the next one. Keep on going!”
