LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The state of Nebraska issued a health alert for a popular lake in Omaha ahead of Fourth of July weekend.

In a press release on Thursday, the state said Harmful Algal Blooms — also known as toxic blue-green algae — was detected in Glenn Cunningham Lake in Douglas County.

Samples taken earlier this week indicated that the toxin level given off by the algae is higher than normal, according to officials.

The state said signs have been posted around the lake, advising the public to use caution and to stay off designated swimming beaches.

According to officials, recreational boating and fishing are still allowed, but the public is urged to use caution and avoid exposure to the water.

People can also still use public areas for camping, picnics and other outdoor activities.
