Health alert: Three Nebraska lakes warned to have toxic algae
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The State of Nebraska issued a health alert on Thursday regarding toxic blue-green algae in three lakes across eastern Nebraska.
Rockford Lake in Gage County, Fremont Lake No. 9 in Dodge County, and Bluestem Lake in Lancaster County are the lakes that are effected.
Samples taken earlier this week at the effected lakes measured above the toxin threshold, making contact with the water dangerous.
Signs have been posted at the lakes advising the public to use caution.
Designated swimming beaches are closed during the alert.
Recreational boating and fishing are permitted, but the public is advised to use caution and avoid exposure to the water.
Officials say to not let pets get in the water or drink from the lake.
People can still use the public areas for camping, picnics and other outdoor activities, according to officials.
