Heat Advisory for southeast Nebraska through Thursday evening

The major headliner of this week is the heat. At times, this heat could become dangerous, so it’ll be important to stay in tune with what your body is telling you this week, check in on loved ones, and be sure to keep fluids nearby.

A Heat Advisory is in effect for most of the state through Tuesday night. Heat indices are expected to be over 100° for an extended amount of time. For north central and western Nebraska, this advisory is set to expire by 10 p.m Tuesday. For southeast Nebraska, and Lincoln, this advisory is valid through Thursday evening.

Knowing the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke is important when we see conditions like these, especially for most of this week. Below is a video explaining more on what those key differences are. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and if you notice those signs, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Each afternoon for the next several days, we’re expecting heat indices over 100°. Humidity will be “sticking” around, making us feel miserable through the last week of July. That humidity backs off just a big on Thursday, but actual air temperatures look to be their highest on that day, so it won’t take much for our heat index to read well over 100° then.

4 Day Heat Index Forecast

Across southeast Nebraska, most dew point temperatures will be in the upper 60s to low 70s for most of Tuesday (the middle column below).

In terms of rain chances, there’s a very spotty chance we see a brief shower late Tuesday morning into the afternoon. Then by the evening, another wave of energy moves in to spark a few isolated strong to severe storms through Tuesday night. Timing toward southeast Nebraska would be after sunset.

Jessica Stormcast

Most of Nebraska included in a Marginal risk, with a small area of a Slight (Level 2 of 5) risk for north central Nebraska. These storms are expected to be isolated, with a few capable of bringing damaging winds and large hail at times.
