Heat tamed a bit with storm chances

The same system that brought flash flooding down in Gage County (near Beatrice) yesterday is going to swing through again today.

It’s going to be steered northeast from Kansas into eastern Nebraska, bringing less rain but cloud cover to hinder heating again Tuesday.

It’ll still be sticky and hot in typical July fashion, but a stray shower and/or storm will work to make this forecast a wash again.

With low confidence in the heat index forecast, the National Weather Service has trimmed the Heat Advisory to only be in effect this afternoon (1 p.m. to 8 p.m.) for extreme northeast Nebraska.

As for the risk for severe weather, another low-end Marginal (Level 1 of 5) risk is in place for western Nebraska. The main threats are some gusty winds and hail.

Isolated storms out in western Nebraska form this evening, moving northeast through the night.

By Wednesday, a cold front will drive some later storms through eastern Nebraska. A Slight (Level 2 of 5) risk highlights northeast Nebraska with a slightly higher probability at damaging wind up that way with storms. A Marginal (Level 1 of 5) risk is in place for southeast Nebraska and late storms eventually coming through Wednesday night into early Thursday.

The blast of heat this week will finally be felt on Wednesday as we clear out and get more sunshine. Temperatures have a better chance at getting into the middle and upper 90s, cooking us especially in the afternoon hours.

Then those late storms Wednesday night with a cold front mentioned before will knock temperatures down to the 80s to end the week.
