Heavy rains causing headaches during planting season

As some crops start to peak from the ground, Sunday night’s rain is causing more growing pains for farmers by Osceola.

Farmers woke up on Monday shocked to see how much rain was covering fields that have recently been planted, putting them even more behind schedule this season.

Kevin Peterson said about 100 acres of his farm ground is currently underwater which he said will need to be replanted.

“The planting season as a whole has been a fight with all the moisture we’ve had, we’ve gotten along here a in this little neck of the woods a lot better than a lot of folks have, but still we’re still at least 2-3 weeks behind what we normally would,” said Osceola farmer Kevin Peterson.

Water was seen gushing into fields and going over county roads. Highway 81 and 92 causing not only a headache for farmers that need to get out to their fields but drivers as well.

“We just received report of Highway 39 about three miles north of Highway 92, the water has got the county roads all flooded and there’s water out in the fields and it’s right to the edge of Highway 39,” said Polk County Sheriff Dwaine Ladwig.

Sheriff Ladwig said that fire departments for Shelby, Strombsberg and Osceola were putting out sand bags by Valley Street on Monday morning.
