Heavy snow possible across southeast Nebraska from weekend winter storm

Friday is the peace, stillness, calm before a weekend storm bringing snow.

Temperatures will not change all that much, with daytime high temperatures in the upper 20s.

Winter Storm Watch is in effect Saturday afternoon through Sunday for parts of south-central and southeast Nebraska. This is a “heads up” to the area likely to see the heavier snow from this storm and winter impacts. We could see this upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning once we get closer to snow starting.

Wsw Fri Morn

Before that, there will be a little snow with minor accumulations in north-central Nebraska through Friday night.

Then scattered, light snow showers will start up as soon as Saturday afternoon as the main storm starts to organize. The snow will fill in across the state by Saturday night. Most of the snow will fall late Saturday night and Sunday morning. Snowfall rates are expected to ramp up especially Sunday morning (when you see darker blues across southeast Nebraska toward Kansas).

Blowing snow with wind gusts approaching 30 mph on Sunday will also add to potential treacherous travel through southeast Nebraska.

Prepping for what’s expected to pile up, Stormcast below will walk you through the coming days, hour by hour.

The highest snowfall amounts will be closer to Kansas and Missouri, with well over a half foot of snow possible. Lincoln is well into the 4-6″+ range in our latest forecast. Most of the rest of the state will see around 2-4″ through Sunday.

What is truly impressive in taking a different look at potential snow through the weekend is the probabilities.

Below you can flip through the chances to see at least 4″ versus 6″ versus 8″ of snow 6 p.m. Saturday through 6 p.m. Sunday (January 4-5th).

And with snow on the ground as school starts back up, we’ll be bracing for a bitter blast! Wind chills in the morning will be ranging from 5-15 degrees below zero early next week for several days.

4 Day Wind Chill

Daytime highs will struggle to warm to only the teens Sunday through about Wednesday.
