High School Football Preview: Lincoln Northeast hopes to keep positive momentum going

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Lincoln Northeast finished last season 4-5, its best record since 2018.

From 2019 to 2023, the Rockets only won three games, making last season a big one for the program.

“My goal for this season is to hopefully make the playoffs,” senior quarterback Grant Matson said. “Build off of last season ’cause I think we had a pretty good season last year, and I think we are even better this year.”

The dual threat QB combined for over 1,000 yards of offense in 2024.

Head coach Javonta Boyd is excited about his returning players and team.

He spoke on staying grounded through the ups and downs ahead of 2025.

“Just talking to them about what expectation is, talking to them about what we need to get better, staying the course, don’t get too high, don’t get too low,” Boyd said. “There is always highs and lows throughout the season, but if you continue to prepare, you’ll be OK.”

Lincoln Northeast kicks off its campaign on Aug. 29 against Omaha Northwest.

Nate’s Four Keys:

  • Let Matson go to work. The dual threat QB threw for 540 yards and ran for 493 yards in 2024, culminating in a team-best 14 total touchdowns.
  • With that, continue finding ways to use now junior quarterback Zayne Scully, who was very efficient in 2024. (Passing: 21-of-32, 322 yards; 7.9 yards per rush.)
  • Build off of solid run game. The Rockets ran for nearly 1,800 yards last season, but their pass game only eclipsed just over 850 yards.
  • Shore up the defense. Lincoln Northeast gave up 196 points in their final four games.
