Holt County deputy dies in crash on icy road in northeast Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A deputy with the Holt County Sheriff’s Office was killed Wednesday in a crash in northeast Nebraska.

Around 10:20 p.m., the Antelope County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash on Highway 275, just east of Neligh.

A pickup truck, driven by Holt County Deputy Steven Binkerd, drifted slightly on the highway’s shoulder.

The sheriff’s office said Binkerd overcorrected, causing the vehicle to lose control on the icy road.

The truck drove into the ditch and crashed with a power pole, according to the sheriff’s office.

Binkerd was pronounced dead at the scene.  An investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Several local law enforcement agencies have sent their condolences to the Holt County Sheriff’s Office and Binkerd’s family on social media.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Holt County Sheriff’s Office as we all collectively mourn the death of Investigator Steven Binkerd,” the Colfax County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

“Thank you for your service to your community,” the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office said.  “Rest easy, Deputy.”
