Hoops in the Railyard: Nebraska basketball announces opening night festivities

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Nebraska basketball’s opening night event is moving out of Pinnacle Bank Arena and into the Railyard this year.
Nebraska Athletics announced Wednesday that this year’s event is being held on Canopy Street between R and Q streets on Oct. 4.
The event features introductions of both Husker teams, remarks from Fred Hoiberg, Amy Williams and players, and contests with players and fans.
“Opening Night is an event our players look forward to because it’s a chance to show their personality and have some fun with our fans,” Hoiberg said in a press release. “Moving it to the Railyard should create a fun environment and allow for more fan interaction with both our basketball programs and kick off what should be a fun Homecoming weekend on campus.”
“We are so excited for the upcoming season, and we can’t wait to see all the Husker fans in the Haymarket,” Williams said. “It should be a great atmosphere as part of the University’s Homecoming weekend and a fun event for everyone.”
The event begins at 7 p.m. and is free to the public. If there is inclement weather, the event will be canceled, officials said.
Both teams are coming off successful seasons, as both made appearances in their respective March Madness tournaments.
The men’s team hadn’t played in a March Madness tournament in a decade before losing to Texas A&M in the first round.
Alexis Markowski, Jaz Shelley and the women’s team ended their tournament run after a second-round loss to Oregon State.
