How to ease your kids’ anxiety about the start of a new school year

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The end of summer break and the start of a new school year can cause anxiety for kids and parents.

For some, it can be even harder, as their kids will be going to school for the first time, and that separation can cause fear and anxiety.

It’s a big step,” said David Miers, senior director of Bryan Health’s behavioral health services. “It’s a big, monumental step for kids as well as parents.”

Miers said it happens because kids are facing a change in routine.

They know their life at home,” he said. “What they’re being faced with going to school is being introduced to a new routine.”

He said that it is important to set realistic expectations.

He suggested getting familiar with the school environment and talking to your kids about what to expect.

“Make some trips back to the school,” he said.

Miers said parents know their kids best.

He said if you see behavior changes that last for two weeks or more after school starts, you should contact a mental health professional.
