Hundreds gather to see what was inside world’s largest time capsule in Seward
SEWARD, Neb. (KLKN) – A square hole in the ground drew hundreds to the site of the world’s largest time capsule in Seward, offering many families a full-circle moment.
Tammy Lincoln of Iowa was only ten years old when her family was chosen at random for the city’s tourism program.
Due to the family’s out-of-state license plate, a Seward police officer pulled them over on the highway to invite them to participate in the city’s Fourth of July celebrations.
Their lodging was paid for, their gas tank filled, and they enjoyed the inauguration of the time capsule on July 4, 1975.
Lincoln brought her sister and two brothers to the time capsule’s anniversary, and says she still remembers what capsule creator Harold Davisson told her fifty years ago.
Davisson’s granddaughter, Ann Leaf-Johnson, was also at the event and also experienced a full-circle moment.
“My grandfather Harold Davisson had me wrap this up and put it in a bag,” she said, while holding a toy dog.
Her grandfather wrote on the outside of the packaging: “This was dropped in by Ann Johnson.”
Along with a team of volunteers, Leaf-Johnson has been working to return capsule items to others waiting on their precious trinkets.
“We’ve had about 400 names, and now our process is going through them to reunite to the people who filled out the form,” she said.
