Husband rescues wife and son from sinking vehicle in Nebraska canal

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A woman and her son were rescued Thursday after she drove into a canal near North Platte.

Around 3:30 p.m., a woman took her son for a ride to get him to fall asleep, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said.

They had both been awake since 3 a.m., according to the sheriff’s office.

During the drive, the woman fell asleep.  When she woke up, the vehicle was going down the steep bank and into the canal.

The woman grabbed her son, broke out the back window and got onto the roof, the sheriff’s office said.

She then called 911.  At the same time, her husband received a notification that the vehicle was involved in a crash and went to the scene.

When he arrived, the vehicle was almost fully underwater, according to the sheriff’s office.

The woman jumped toward the bank, and her husband pulled them out of the water.

No one was seriously injured, and dive teams worked with a local towing company to get the vehicle out of the water.
