Husker fans say women’s basketball team has been ‘inspiring’ this year
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Despite the rain Sunday, many Husker fans still went out to watch the women’s basketball game in Lincoln.
One fan, Amber Jackson, said her friends had season tickets and they made it to almost every game this year.
She said watching the growth of women’s sports in Nebraska is inspirational.
“They say, ‘if you can see it, you can be it,’ and I think Nebraska’s been a great example of that,” Jackson said. “As somebody who played sports a long time ago, it’s fun to watch these little kids have these great icons to look up to.”
Former Husker offensive lineman Ethan Piper was cheering on the women at Hopcat. He said he’s enjoyed seeing the surge for women’s basketball.
“I’m excited to watch the girl’s game almost as much or more than the men’s games,” he said. “It’s picking up some steam.”
Jamie Peterson said working security at Pinnacle Bank Arena allowed her to interact with the team and watch them grow closer as the season progressed.
“When they come out and they say hi, they’re just really friendly and they’re great people,” she said. “It’s crazy all the little girls that go and watch and sit after for autographs. The team is very inspiring to younger women.”
Kevin Coleman, another dedicated Husker fan, said no matter the sport, the players bring great energy.
“Any Husker women’s event you go to, the support is there, the energy is there, the fans are there,” he said. “It’s all about heart and effort and being aggressive on offense and defense every time.”
