Husker player named to 2018 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team

Husker defensive lineman Freedom Akinmoladun had no idea it was coming.

The senior was volunteering at Tabitha senior care facility Wednesday, taking part in a Q&A session with three teammates in front of a crowd decked out in Cornhusker gear.

Towards the end of the event, Huskers Life Skills team leader Stacey Burling said that there was a special surprise for Akinmoladun – he was being named to the 2018 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

The honor is bestowed on a few players each year to honor them for their community service.

Freedom’s resume is jam-packed with community service experience including over 100 volunteer events that he has attended in his four years at Nebraska.

It includes a trip to Panama with his teammates where they built a preschool classroom for children in the local community.

Freedom has also volunteered locally with the Wounded Warrior Project, participated in food drives, holiday gift drives and clothing drives.

The audience cheered and applauded while learning about Freedom’s dedication to community service.

After graciously accepting his 2018 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team award, Freedom made his rounds among the crowd of seasoned fans to offer a warm hug and autograph to all.
