Husker strength coach Corey Campbell’s offseason goal: ‘Get 1% better every day’

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Nebraska strength coach Corey Campbell is passionate about the Huskers’ walk-on program.

Why? Because Campbell was a walk-on himself when he played college football at Georgia from 2011 to 2013.

“It means even more for me to help these guys,” he said at a Wednesday press conference.

Campbell said that through training in the weight room and speaking with strength coaches, he was able to contribute as a walk-on.

“You can achieve what you want to achieve if you’re willing to put in work,” he said.

Campbell praised the “level of commitment” from Nebraska’s walk-ons.

Now almost 10 years removed from his time in Athens, Campbell has been tasked with developing not only walk-ons, but the entire Nebraska football roster.

When he walked through the door at the end of November, Campbell said, the students were eager to work, which is something he values.

His first assignment was figuring out a baseline for the players, which involves evaluating their mechanics, efficiency and overall strength.

And now, with less than two months before the spring game, Campbell said the Huskers’ offseason goal has been to “get 1% better every day.”

“Attention to detail, effort are huge pillars of what we look to accomplish in a weight room, and also the mindset of hard work,” he said.

Those goals are reflected by head coach Matt Rhule, who worked with Campbell at Carolina and Baylor.

Campbell said he and Rhule are in “constant communication” about the team’s expectations for the weight room and also for the entire football program.

“We all have to speak the same language, we all have to echo the same things within our respective areas,” he said.
