Husker volleyball captains making big impact on young team
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Nebraska volleyball coach John Cook laughed this week thinking about not having to worry about the distractions that usually come with senior night.
“We have no seniors, so there’s no senior night,” he said. “So that’s really weird!”
The top-ranked Huskers don’t have a single senior on their roster, but they aren’t lacking in leadership.
Captains Merritt Beason and Lexi Rodriguez have been instrumental in guiding the Huskers this year.
The two have banded the team together through adversity, including beating Wisconsin and Penn State in five sets.
Most of all, the juniors have helped mentor the freshmen on the team, setting an example on and off the court for players like Andi Jackson and Laney Choboy.
“Merritt’s a great person; she’s an even better captain,” Jackson said. “Her coming in from a different school into a new environment and just being able to take that leadership role is huge.”
Choboy said it’s great to learn from Rodriguez.
“She’s been a really big part of how we are this year,” Choboy said.
