Husker volleyball fans come from far and wide for Volleyball Day in Nebraska
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Starting early Wednesday morning, fans from all over Nebraska gathered to be part of Volleyball Day in Nebraska.
Some of them even got to meet the team.
Fans wrote letters to the volleyball players, made banners and bracelets in the Coliseum while waiting for the team to arrive.
“I’ve been very excited since they announced it, being’s it’s one of a kind, first time for anybody to do it,” Les Mulen said.
One woman came all the way from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
“I came in last night, drove 4½ hours for this big event,” Jane Sallee said. “Just so excited. I can’t wait.”
And meeting the players meant the world to Nebraska’s future generations of volleyball players.
“I’m really happy because I’m a big fan of Bekka Allick.” said Neveah Kehr, a Husker fan who wants to be on the team.
A high school volleyball team from Maxwell visited, saying they adjusted their practice schedule to make it to today’s matches.
Maxwell is more than 200 miles to the west.
“We were all so excited, so we had early morning practice, and got ready, and headed over here at 10 o’clock,” one player said.
Falls City Sacred Heart’s team also came, and coach Emma Ebel shared how important this is to her team.
“For me and for a lot of these adults here who know what this means not just for women in sports but for the sport of volleyball in general, we’re really excited,” she said. “And I’m so glad we were able to bring 45 kids from our school here to do this.”
Coach John Cook shared some words with fans from the players before the game: “Tomorrow is a celebration of making the impossible possible.”
