Husker wrestler tried to light dorm room door on fire, UNLPD says
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A Nebraska wrestler is facing a misdemeanor charge after an incident in a dormitory hallway.
Colin McAlister, 18, pleaded not guilty on Monday to criminal mischief.
He is being held in the Lancaster County Jail on a $1,000 bond.
On Saturday night, just before midnight, a student living at Smith Hall reported that someone tried to light her dorm room door on fire.
She told the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Police Department that she heard a lighter flickering and smelled smoke through her door.
The student opened the door and saw someone running away, according to court documents.
An arrest affidavit says part of the door had its coating burned off.
Police said surveillance video captured McAlister riding the elevator up to that floor and taking the stairs down.
Both times, he was holding a lighter, UNLPD said.
On Tuesday, a Nebraska Athletics spokesperson said McAlister was no longer on the wrestling team.
The spokesperson said in a statement:
“The Nebraska Athletic Department is aware of the incident and charges and can confirm that Colin McAlister has been dismissed from the wrestling program. We have no additional comment on this matter.”
