‘I couldn’t believe it’: Massive cleanup underway in Lincoln after blizzard topples trees

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lincolnites woke up to a massive mess Thursday after a blizzard.

The winds brought down powerlines and trees across the city, some landing on homes and others on cars.

“I thought it was thunder, then my neighbor called me and said, ‘Hey, the tree hit your house,'” said Don Miller, who lives near 84th and O streets. “I went out and looked, of course, and I couldn’t believe it.”

Miller said as soon as he saw that the tree had torn up his roof, he called his insurance provider and filed a claim.

Homeowners across the city are now dealing with those claims, structural damage and in some cases, picking up the debris themselves.

But Miller said he’s focused on a bigger concern: his roof.

“We had a roofing company come this morning, and he looked at it,” he said. “I don’t think I’m going to get any animals running in yet.”

Miller said his grandson was chipping away at the fallen tree for a few hours on Thursday.

“I think there’s going to be a fair amount of people in Lincoln, doing what I’m doing: repairing trees, roofs and what have you,” he said. “I don’t want anyone else to go through this.”

If you see a tree blocking a road or sidewalk, call the police non-emergency number at 402-441-6000.

Police will report it to the Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department.
