‘I think they believe now’: Nebraska men’s basketball overcomes Maryland in overtime
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Nebraska men’s basketball team defeated Maryland in overtime 70-66 at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Sunday.
Derrick Walker scored a game-high 23 points, and Keisei Tominaga added 20 on his way to his 10th game of the season with double figures.
Nebraska led 31-24 at halftime and kept the momentum early in the second half until Maryland went on to take a 50-42 lead.
The Huskers later rallied, outscoring Maryland 10-8 the rest of the way.
The rally included a driving layup from Walker with less than 30 seconds remaining in regulation to tie it at 58 and send the game to overtime.
The story of the game was in the extra minutes, when Tominaga hit a 3-pointer to draw first blood before Maryland and Nebraska traded points.
It was Sam Hoiberg who sealed it for Nebraska. He grabbed a major steal and layup to clinch the Huskers’ win.
“I knew I was going to try and get that steal, and I did today,” Sam Hoiberg said. “Perfect timing.”
Head coach Fred Hoiberg said the Huskers displayed a full team effort.
“A lot of people were saying, when we had the injuries (to Emmanuel Bandoumel and Juwan Gary), ‘What could have been?’ the coach said. “My message to the guys was: ‘What can still be?’ Those guys fight like hell, they practice as hard as anybody and they are resilient. … I think they believe now that they can do it.”
