‘I was a little disappointed’: Fans sound off on Nebraska football canceling Tennessee games
LINCOLN, Neb (KLKN) – Nebraska Athletic Director Troy Dannen on Friday scrapped a home-and-home series between Nebraska football and Tennessee in 2026 and 2027.
Some University of Nebraska-Lincoln students are a little upset about it.
“I was a little disappointed ’cause Tennessee is obviously a really good team, so it would have been a great game to go to,” sophomore Brady Auxier said.
Another sophomore, Jake White, said, “With our home crowd, and our environment, it would have been a huge game for us.”
This is now the second time the series has been canceled. Nebraska and Tennessee had their 2016-17 series postponed until 2026-27.
Nebraska said it called off this series because of new renovations going on at Memorial stadium.
Some students understand the reasoning.
“In my opinion, I think I’m OK with it,” Dylan Jurgens said. “It’s going to be really, really hard to fit everyone in this stadium because it’s going to be a huge game.”
In place of the two games on Nebraska’s schedule, it will play Bowling Green in 2026 and Miami of Ohio in 2027.
Tennessee would have been the first SEC team to play in Lincoln since 1981, but now fans will have to wait a little bit longer.
There’s a game against Oklahoma set for 2030.
Nebraska will have to pay Tennessee of $1 million — $500,000 for each game.
