‘I was definitely shocked’: Branched Oak beachgoers thought twice about lake day

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Campers and beachgoers continued to host birthday parties and bring their dogs to Branched Oak Lake on Wednesday afternoon, despite the deadly shooting at the marina the night before.

The entrance to the marina and restaurant opened just after noon, as Lancaster County sheriff’s deputies were seen driving away.

The homicide at Branched Oak Lake did not deter some from coming out to the lake, though.

Locals consider Branched Oak to be a safe place for children and said having a shooting nearby at the marina was concerning.

“I was definitely shocked because apparently, normally, it happens kind of where they throw the parties and that kind of thing,” beachgoer Ellie Jilek said. “So, we were definitely shocked about the marina. Yeah, it’s definitely concerning that it’s so close. It’s really a family spot.”

Officials say the suspect knew where he was headed. They believe the shooting was not random.

Locals said once they heard those details, they continued with their plans.

“We had an outing planned today with six of the kids and their friends, and we saw the news article this morning,” beachgoer Chelsea Lindgren said. “But I did read that it sounded like it was a more targeted crime. So we felt safe coming out here with the kids today.”

One retired couple camping nearby did not hear about the shooting until friends texted them in the morning. They said they would have been more concerned had their grandchildren been with them.

“I always felt safe out here,” Dave Danahy said. “You know, they’ve had some issues in the past with parties and things like that, but I think they’ve kind of put a lid on most of that. Everybody that camps here is really friendly, and they watch out for each other.”

While the suspect remains at large, residents who live nearby said they plan to keep coming to the lake.
