Cdc Updates Safety Alert For Salmonella In Cantaloupes After Infection In Rhode Island, Massachusetts

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that it has updates to a safety alert regarding salmonella in cantaloupes.

The CDC said that Malichita and Rudy brand whole cantaloupes have been recalled, as well as pre-cut cantaloupes from brands including Kwik Trip, Bix Produce, Kroger, Sprouts Farmers Market, and Trader Joe’s.

The CDC added that 117 people in 34 states have been infected with salmonella from cantaloupes, and that more than half of these cases have resulted in hospitalization.

One person in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island are included in the list of infections.

Guidance for how to avoid salmonella infection from this outbreak includes avoiding eating pre-cut cantaloupes from the recalled brands, washing surfaces touched by potentially infected products with hot, soapy water, and seeking medical care if showing any symptoms of salmonella infections.

Symptoms of infection include diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and dizziness.
