PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Providence nonprofit organization gave out culturally-appropriate Thanksgiving food to those in need on Thursday.
Higher Ground International holds its annual Thanksgiving food drive to serve low-income and marginalized Rhode Islanders.
Many Rhode Islanders filled their trunks with bags of fresh food at the distribution drive at 21 Peace St. in Providence.
Organizers said Higher Ground spends almost $30,000 a month for its food pantry.
It’s nearly reached $60,000 this month for Thanksgiving, which organizers say is its biggest yearly holiday for food distribution.
The organization said its “dedicated to restoring dignity, keeping peace, and empowering the lives” of Liberian and West African immigrants and refugees, as well as other community members in need of assistance.
This year, the organization had enough food for 550 families, including turkeys, fresh fish, shellfish, eggs, vegetables, and non-perishables like stuffing, beans, spices, and oils.
The organization started the annual mission in 2020, and has provided over one million bags of food to Rhode Island families.
