PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Blood Center and local leaders will hold a media briefing on the critical need for blood donors in the new year.

Gov. Dan McKee and other local leaders are set to speak on the constant need for blood donors and encourage eligible Rhode Islanders to be a part in saving lives.

January is recognized as National Blood Donor Month.

RIBC officials said President Richard Nixon signed the proclamation over 50 years ago.

“The annual observance is meant to honor voluntary blood donors and encourage more people to give blood at a time when more blood is needed. The weeks following the holiday season are always difficult for the blood supply as school breaks, holiday travel, seasonal illness and cold weather often contribute to fewer donations,” the RIBC said in a statement.

“Hospitals and patients rely upon a steady flow of volunteer donors, but the past few years have brought chronic blood shortages nationwide,” the RIBC continued.

The briefing will be held at the Providence donation site at 1 p.m. Tuesday.
