GLASGOW, Scotland (WLNE) — A sheriff in Scotland decided Wednesday that a former Rhode Island man who faked his own death can be extradited back to the United States.
Sheriff McFadyen said Nicholas Alahverdian is as “dishonest and deceitful as he is evasive and manipulative.”
McFadyen concluded that the extradition is “compatible with the Convention rights within the meaning of the Human Rights Act 1998.”
“It follows that I must send the case of the requested person Nicholas Rossi to the Scottish ministers for their decision whether he is to be extradited,” said the judge.
McFadyen said he heard evidence from three medical professionals and three American legal professional witnesses, who all gave “credible and reliable evidence.”
Alahverdian will be sent to Utah, where he faces two separate rape charges.
The case has gained international attention as Alahverdian faked his own death in Rhode Island in 2020.
In January of this year, the Utah County Attorney’s Office revealed that they tracked down Alahverdian in Scotland and that he was in fact alive.
Alahverdian went by several aliases, including Nicholas Rossi and Arthur Knight. Fingerprints and DNA confirmed that they were all the same person.
