Swansea hosts informational session on proposed Brayton Point windfarm project

SWANSEA, Mass. (WLNE) — The town of Swansea could look very different soon if a Massachusetts energy company has its way.

Dozens gathered Wednesday night at the Swansea Center on Aging to hear about a proposed wind farm at Brayton Point in neighboring Somerset.

The meeting was held by South Coast Wind and Prysmian, two groups saying their goal is to bring renewable energy to New England.

If approved, the project would cover more than 125,000 acres. It would take up to three years to complete.

Community Liaison Kelsey Perry said the proposed location at Brayton Point is already primed for this type of work.

“A really great asset of Brayton Point is that National Grid does already have infrastructure there that’s existing and ready to be able to host offshore wind projects,” she explained.

The Brayton Point project is still going through state and federal permitting processes.

The next major step in the process is an environmental impact survey, which is scheduled for October.
