PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island Treasurer James Diossa announced that the Employees’ Retirement System of Rhode Island filed a class-action lawsuit against The Boeing Company, Tuesday.
Diossa said that Boeing disregarded serious safety concerns and that the company let out false and misleading statements about these safety concerns.
“The Employees’ Retirement System of Rhode Island is taking the lead and holding companies that affect the financial wellbeing of Rhode Islanders to the highest standards. Boeing betrayed the trust of Rhode Island pensioners and must be held accountable for their actions. The disregard for safety displayed in these series of events involving Boeing aircrafts are deeply concerning. We believe that this case has the potential to effect changes in Boeing’s practices to protect passengers and ensure their safety in the future.”
One indecent regarding safety concern in particular was the event that occurred on Jan. 5, 2024, on Alaskan Airlines Flight 1282, where a door plug blew out shortly after takeoff.
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration launched an investigation later that day, unveiling that United Airlines personnel had found loose bolts during inspections on an “undisclosed number” of aircraft.
Alaskan Airlines also announced that their inspections ran reports of faulty hardware on their aircraft.
The civil case was filed in the United States District Court Eastern District of Virginia.
