In State of the University, President Gold says NU is well-positioned despite challenges

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — University of Nebraska President Jeffery Gold delivered his State of the University address on Thursday.

Gold addressed students, faculty, and staff about the challenges and changes ahead.

He discussed the impact from both the federal and state level when it comes to funding and policy changes.

“For Nebraska to thrive in an increasing complex and competitive world, the state must continue to invest boldly in its only land grant university system,” he said.

Gold highlighted new initiatives aimed at maintaining student retention, supporting research and strengthening partnerships with communities across Nebraska.

“We fuel industries from agriculture to health care, from defense to education,” Gold said. “From every corner of the state, the University of Nebraska is present, making a meaningful difference.”

When he stepped off the podium, Channel 8 asked Gold about the $159,000 bonus that he declined.

“I really didn’t want an incentive piece in the contract at all,” Gold said.

But he told Channel 8 that the Board of Regents insisted.

“I said, ‘If you think a financial incentive is going to motivate me to work harder, longer and better, you ought to hire someone else because you really don’t know me.'”

Gold acknowledged the challenges ahead but said the university is positioned to meet them head-on, focusing on access, affordability and excellence.

“Even if there’s a student in the first year of the program, we guarantee them that they will get their degree in the program that they selected,” he said. “So my message to our students — incoming, returning, undergraduate and professional — rest assured, we got you, and we’ll take care of you.”
